In a landmark initiative that underscores our enduring dedication to fostering connections both within our local sphere and across the globe, the City of Hamilton has proudly embraced Paynesville City, Liberia, as its newest Hamilton Sister City. This momentous partnership, celebrated with overwhelming support from the City of Hamilton Council on February 14, 2024 and enriches our already diverse international family.

Hamilton was already twinned with an impressive array of 10 municipalities worldwide, including Racalmuto (Sicily) Italy; Valle Peligna (Abruzzo) Italy; Shawinigan, Quebec; Flint, Michigan; Sarasota, Florida; Monterrey, Mexico; Mangalore, India; Ma’anshan, China; Fukuyama, Japan; and Kaga, Japan.

This historic expansion of Hamilton Sister City program to include Paynesville City, Liberia symbolizes a profound commitment to international solidarity and communal prosperity, furthering our mission to build bridges across cultures and continents and now makes it 11 municipalities!

Spearheaded by Hamilton’s own Rotarians, Leo Johnson and Paul Takala, this partnership has birthed the Liberian Learning Center, a beacon of hope and education in Paynesville. This project is a testament to the power of collaboration, drawing on the strengths of Hamilton institutions such as the Hamilton Public Library, McMaster University, and McCallum Sather Architects, with the Rotary Club of Hamilton playing a pivotal role.

LITERACY LOCAL LEADERS

The Rotary Club of Hamilton has been instrumental in raising funds for the development of a new library in Paynesville, set to open its doors on February 23. This initiative stands as a proud testament to our commitment to literacy and education on a global scale, reflecting our ethos of “service above self.” Our efforts in Paynesville, coupled with local endeavors like the summer literacy camps for inner-city children and the Telling Tales Festival, underscore our dedication to nurturing young minds both at home and abroad.
