Rotary Club of Hamilton members recently welcomed the opportunity to sit down with MP Aslam Rana,
who represents Hamilton Centre, for a conversation about the work Rotary does in our community and
around the world.
Past President Adam Oldfield led the discussion, joined by Badar Shamim, who serves on the Rotary
International PolioPlus Advocacy Task Force for Canada, President Stewart Wynne, and Eileen
Walker. Adam attended in his own capacity as a member of Rotary International’s Polio Eradication
Advocacy Task Force, giving the group a direct line into Rotary’s global health priorities.
The conversation covered the full scope of what Rotary Club of Hamilton contributes locally, from youth
and career programming to community support initiatives, alongside a deeper look at Rotary
International’s PolioPlus program. Since 1988, Rotary and its partners have reduced polio cases
worldwide by more than 99 percent, and Canada’s federal government continues to be a strong partner
in that effort. It was an opportunity to walk MP Rana through why this work matters, both globally and
right here in Hamilton Centre.
As part of the visit, MP Rana was presented with a Rotary pin, a small gesture that reflects a growing
relationship between Rotary Club of Hamilton and our federal representative.
We’re looking forward to building on this connection. MP Rana will join us as a guest at an upcoming
Rotary meeting, and he’ll also take part in our World of Choices Career Exploration Day, presented in
partnership with Junior Achievement, giving Hamilton’s next generation a chance to meet the people
shaping our community’s future.
Thank you to MP Rana for his time and genuine interest in Rotary’s mission. Conversations like these
are how community and government find common ground, and how causes like polio eradication keep
moving forward.
