Update on the Christopher Cutler Memorial Little Library

We would like to provide an update regarding the Christopher Cutler Memorial Little Library located in front of Cathy Wever School.
On June 16, representatives of the Rotary Club of Hamilton met with officials from the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board to discuss the future of the Little Library. The School Board has advised that it is requesting the removal of the Little Library from school property before September 1, 2026.
The Board cited concerns regarding books being donated to the Little Library that are not subject to review or approval by the School Board, as well as safety concerns related to reports of needles and syringes being found in and around the Little Library.
While we are disappointed with this decision, our commitment to literacy in this neighbourhood remains as strong as ever. The conditions that the HWDSB requested, would not have aligned with the values and mission of the project to remove barriers and create easy access to books and literacy tools for children, youth and families in the community.
As members of our Rotary executive team were leaving the meeting, they witnessed a heartwarming scene that perfectly captured the importance of this community resource. Three young girls had stopped at the Little Library and were eagerly searching through the books, laughing, pushing, and playfully competing to find the perfect book to take home. It was a simple but powerful reminder of why this project was created and why access to books remains so important for children, youth, and families in our community.
Over the past 12 years, the Christopher Cutler Memorial Little Library has provided more than 20,000 books and literacy resources to neighbourhood residents. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it also served as a vital community hub, providing access to educational resources, activity kits, school supplies, food supports, and personal protective equipment.
The Rotary Club of Hamilton remains committed to ensuring that this important literacy initiative continues. Over the coming months, our Inner City and Youth Initiatives Committee will be working to identify a new location for the Little Library and develop plans for its reopening and rededication in September.
We will continue to keep our members informed as plans progress and opportunities arise for member support and involvement.
We have attached a copy of the media release that will be sent out as well as the website update.
Thank you for your continued commitment to literacy, children, and families in our community.
